Part lush tropical garden.

Entirely unlike anywhere you've stayed before.

From the street,
you would never guess....

Step inside and the building unfolds — through a plant-filled lobby, down a hallway where orchids bloom, into a soaring open-air atrium where palms have grown all the way to the roofline, and out to a lush back patio where the sound of fountains fill the senses and the Nayarit sky opens wide above you.

I was stunned by the elegance and serenity when I walked off the street into the lobby. Thora and Shawn have created a haven right in the middle of Lo de Marcos."

Every door and window in Casa Botanica was custom made by local carpenters with parota wood that adds extraordinary warmth to every room. Each room is crowned with a traditional bóveda ceiling — the ancient arched brickwork technique that defines the architecture of this area of  Mexico.

Each room was curated, piece by piece, with items chosen with a discriminating eye. The carpets were brought from California along with  furniture, art, textiles and the accumulated vision of someone who had been thinking about this building for years.

This is not a renovated building.

It is an artfully crafted one.

Some beaches have jet skis. Our Beach has horses.

A genuine fishing pueblo. Unhurried streets. Warm, welcoming faces. Family restaurants serve whatever came in fresh that morning. The pueblo moves at its own pace. Horses clip-clop down the street. The smell of churros drifts from the plaza. Someone's grandmother sweeps her doorstep.

Life is unhurried here. In the plaza, Lo De Marcos celebrates everything. Decorated with  gods' eyes handwoven by the local community and children, music spills out into the street. Vendors sell churros, crepes and aguas naturales. The Saturday market adds artisanal crafts and gourmet foods.

And at the end of a three-minute walk from your room, a wide, clean, spectacular beach that on most days you will share with nearly no one.

Tucked along the Riviera Nayarit coast between San Pancho and Sayulita, Lo De Marcos is the kind of Mexican beach town that travel writers hesitate to write about, because those that discover it want to keep it unchanged and to themselves.

Not a resort destination. This is real Mexico ....authentic and unspoiled. And once you have found it, it is hard to leaveand impossible to forget.
